My suriname red tail boa constrictor striking her frozen thawed weaned rat. She's 11 months old, 38 inches, 15 ounces, and gets a weaned rat every 2 weeks. She is pure muscle, and could definitely handle small rats. However, BC's are prone to regurgitation so I play it very safe with them. I don't feed anything larger than the thickest part of their body and leave little to no lump. I'll likely switch to small rats at the beginning of October. No rush. Boas have VERY slow metabolisms and are usually overfed. They get much less excercise in captivity than in the wild and eat much more often. Sadly people think because they've been feeding a certain way for 20 years that that's correct. But we have learned a lot more about boas digestion over the last 5 years or so and you should always be learning. Pay attention to new studies in the Science World. I personally do not switch to rats until they are big enough to take weaned or small because anyting younger than weaned still has its mother's milk in its stomach and that's not only unnecessary fat content, but reptiles do not produce milk like mammals do. And it can make them sick. When I work at the reptile rescue we frequently got boas and other snakes that got sick and on a few occasions even died because of milk. Her and the Guyana will be in quarantine for one more month as I always do minimum of 90 days quarantine for new animals, and then they will be going into their individual enclosures. 4 ft by 2ft by 2ft.
